William Russell, Jr. Obituary

On November 20, 2023, at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton Virginia, William Wesley Russell, Jr., departed this life to be with the Lord.

William Russell was born to Rebecca Thomas and William Wesley Russell on January 22, 1935. He was in the Class of 1954 and graduated from Douglass High School in Leesburg, Virginia.

On January 6, 1958, Josephine Nickens and William Russell decided to get married two days before he left for Army boot camp. Josephine’s grandfather, Reverend Rubin Nickens in Frederick, Maryland married them. On that date, they decided they were committed to staying together through sickness and in health. The day she married the love of her life became one of Josephine's favorite days.

William Wesley Russell, Jr. was a devoted, kind, and loving husband to Josephine Russell for 65 years. He was a father to Briane Russell (Denise), Addell Russell, and Milton Russell (deceased). He was a grandfather to Eric Russell, Derek Russell (Whitney), Stephanie Good, Dylane Good (Kaithlyn) and Destine Washington. A great grandfather to Mila Good, Tatum Good and Theodore Russell.

He was a man with many accomplishments in his life. William was stationed in Germany while serving our country in the US Army. He retired from the federal government after 40 years of working at the Warrenton Training Center as a Security Officer. He joined Faith Christian Church and International Outreach Center as a Deacon. Later, he became an ordained Elder and served on the Financial Board. He served as an Elder for thirty plus years. The one thing we knew was that he really loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Each morning he would have his daily devotional and before going to bed, he and his wife would have their nightly devotion to cover the family with prayers.

Our fondest moments with “Pop Pop” William Wesley Russell, Jr. was that every time one of his children or grandchildren accomplished something in their lives he was there. Best believe he was there front and center cheering us on. Whenever we needed something, he was a phone call away and was always there. When we had family outings to a buffet, Pop Pop had us there for hours, talking, laughing, and of course eating. He would get a plate and tell us “Now hold on let me drink some more water to make some more room.” Every year there was a big car show in Washington, DC. He would go with Dylane, Destine or Briane every year. His favorite place to go in the show was the classics. He would inspect the car in every way possible down to the nuts they used. He loved watching car races on TV and going to the auto racetrack or car drag strip. During his free time, you could expect him to be out in the garden, working on his cars or just working in the house. Whenever Pop Pop came to Culpeper, his first thing he would do is go straight to Harbor Freight. He always carried tools wherever he went; you never know what needed to be fixed. When the family came together every holiday, they just knew he would start a performance using spoons as an instrument. He always knew how to make us smile and laugh.

He is survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is walking the streets of heaven with his mother, father, his three brothers (David, Robert, Allen) and his son Milton Russell.

We will deeply miss you, Darling Bill, Dad, Pop Pop.
