Tyrone Edwards Obituary

Tyrone Edwards was born in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 1939, to the late Allen and Marie Lilly Edwards. God called him home on January 10, 2024.

Tyrone was educated in the Washington, D.C. Public School System and graduated from McKinley Tech High School.

He was employed by Howard University in Washington, D.C, as a Head Registrar for Student Admission from 1969 to 1999, earning “Employee of the Month” for February 1993. He retired after 30 years of service. After retiring, he was employed by ABC Learning in Manassas, VA, and other daycares in the Manassas area, specializing in special needs children.

Tyrone was a member of the First Baptist Church-Georgetown of Washington, DC, and later joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Gainesville, VA, under the late Rev. Wilbur L. Henry.

He met and married Mary Catherine Peterson on December 11, 1971, and recently celebrated 52 years of marriage. He has one daughter, Anitra Marie Connelley and had a foster son, James Carter(deceased)

Tyrone was ordained as a deacon on June 19, 1977, by the late Rev. Boykin Young and served as the treasurer for the Deacons until his passing.

He was a member of the Deacons’ Choir, the W. L. Henry Chorus, and the Young’s Mass Choir, where he served as President for many years.

Because Tyrone was an employee by an Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), he enjoyed guiding students to further their education. Serving as president of the Nancy L. Young Scholarship Fund at Mt. Pleasant allowed him the opportunity to do so.

He served in the capacity of office manager for Mount Pleasant for many years, keeping immaculate records of the church.

Tyrone was known for his stylish way of dressing and was often requested to participant and model in many area fashion shows. This was something that he enjoyed.

He was also an excellent cook and was known for his pig feet dinners and corn pudding dishes. He was also a collector of special belt buckles.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Allen Edwards and Marie Lilly Edwards; one brother, Thomas (Buster) Lilly; and four sisters: Fredericka Wilson, Beulah Proctor, Gladys Scott and Joyce Mullins; and a foster son, James Carter.

Tyrone leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Anitra Marie Connelley; three granddaughters; and seven great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his son in law, Eugene W  Connelley
