Taknika Arnethea Carter arrived in this world at 6:09 am Sunday, September 3, 1978, in Arlington, VA. Perhaps it was her early morning arrival on her actual due date that led to her casual lateness to family functions throughout her life.
Taknika grew up in Jefferson Village in Falls Church, VA where she had a cousin, aunt or uncle literally living on every corner. They all spoiled her rotten, especially her great grandparents, John and Pearl Carter, who called her “Peaches.” When her parents moved to Centreville, VA, she met Chantelle Davis and Silvia Perdomo who would become her lifelong sister-friends.
Her dad Earl is still trying to determine how it was she become a diehard Dallas Cowboy’s fan. As she would say “we them boys!” and she would defend her team no matter what. But whether in sports or in life if you were a part of “Team Taknika” you had a supporter like no other. Just like any old school mom she would defend you in public to anyone but take you home and get you straight, provide a listening ear and or provide you with needed encouragement. Then she would say, “Let’s go! We got this!”
While she often struggled as a young single mom raising her three daughters with the help of her brother, James (Sleepy) she never gave up and was seldom without her smile. Taleah was her oldest child whom she said was most like her in attitude. Takyla was her middle child and would be the time keeper and Tanee was the typical baby who could do no wrong.
Taknika was known for her signature mac and cheese, our family gatherings will not be the same without her.
She leaves to forever cherish her presence her daughters: TaLeah Thompson, Takyla and Tanee Carter; her parents: Earl and Tina Carter Douglas; her brothers: James and Joshua Douglas; grandparents: Carrol and Gertrude Carter Buchanan Richard White; special cousins: Andrea and Takayla Carter; godparents: Gordon and Ursula Carter and a host of other family and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2020, at 11 am, at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Fortune Mountain Road, Marshall, VA.
