Nancy Mae Fletcher (Elkins) was born on October 13, 1951, in Warrenton, VA. Nancy transitioned to her eternal life on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the age of 72. She was raised by her maternal grandmother, Flossie Tapp, with a firm hand and a lot of love in a tiny house in Bealeton, VA, still owned by family. She spent her childhood years in this house growing up with her favorite Aunt Gail, and countless cousins, including her closest ones - Cookie and Bea.
Nancy’s humble beginnings made her a hard worker her entire life. She went to Cedar Lee Middle School and washed dishes there every day to pay for her lunch. Nancy dropped out of school after 8th grade and married her first husband, John Coro, Sr, at the tender age of 15. Nancy and John had two children – John Michael, Jr. and Michelle Lynn. By the age of 25, Nancy and John parted ways and she began her “adventures” on the dating scene, aka the Warrenton Bowling Alley, with her partner in crime, Reenie O’Brien. The bowling alley is where a couple of suitors sparked her interest, including her 2nd husband, Bobby (Robert) King, Jr. whom she married in 1979. Together they had two daughters, Melissa Anne and Robyn McKinley. Their union ended after 20+ years. Then, in a beautiful twist of fate, Nancy reconnected with that other old flame from the bowling alley, Baldie (Robert) Fletcher – the truest love of her life. Nancy and Baldie got married and blended their families, blessing her with bonus children, Mark and Angela, and their children and the whole Fletcher tribe. As everyone knows, family was everything to Nancy and she had now surrounded herself with the most loving group of individuals she could have ever dreamed up.
In the mid 1970’s, Nancy began her career at McDonald’s. Years of working long and strenuous shifts, training “cool” teenagers, dealing with typical fast-food nonsense, she rose to the manager role – further increasing her frustrations and hours, with minimal financial reward. The 20+ years of hard work there serving the community consumed much of her time and energy, but she loved it because she was a people person and formed many special relationships with customers and coworkers. Some, but certainly not all, of those great friends include Amanda Wood, Arlene Cotter, Pamela Lewis, Tony Smith, Toni Gretton, Pauline O’Bannion, Joy Byrd, Margo Town, and Clara Gray. After retiring from McDonald’s, Nancy started a 2nd career as a receptionist, mostly with GTSI, ultimately leaving the office life after 15 years. An unfortunate turn of events placed Nancy at her son-in-law’s business, Fred’s Deli, on Main Street in Warrenton, VA, where she managed the day-to-day operations. Using her degree from Hamburger University, she interacted with, served and entertained the Warrenton community for several years.
Nancy’s upbringing and life experiences helped create the quick-witted woman with the most inappropriate sense of humor and outrageous personality everyone loved so much. To know her was to love her and she never knew a stranger – they were just people she was going to make laugh, love, and possibly shock! Her colorful vocabulary and hilarious antics will always be remembered; however, it is her loving and nurturing nature that will be her legacy.
Nancy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Baldie, her beautiful granddaughter, Tahra, and her beloved dog, Fluffy. She will be lovingly remembered by her six children: Johnny, Michelle (Farhad), Melissa, Robyn (Chris), Mark (Carla), Angela (Doug); fifteen grandchildren: Lawrence, Bryant, Brendan, Ruscha, Bryce, Chris Jr., Aiden, Daelyn, Matt, Casey (Zack), Kellie, Kerrie, Charles Jr., Cayden, and Ethan; sixteen great-grandchildren: Caylor, Ayvah, Journey, Gabriel, Logan, Macie, Summer, Marlie, Ryan, Zaelon, Calleyana, Luke, Hazel, Michael, Ellie, and Dane; and countless adopted family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, from 10am until 11am with funeral ceremony starting at 11am, at Faith Christian Church, 6472 Duhollow Road, Warrenton, VA, 20187. Rev. Brian Morton will deliver the eulogy.
