Mildred Washington Obituary

The beloved Mildred Summers Washington, 89, resident of Tucson, Arizona and long-time member of the Markham and Winchester, Virginia communities transitioned peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at home with family.

Mother Mildred S. Washington was born in Rectortown, Virginia on June 22, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Virginia and Lewis Summers, Sr. She was the fifth child of their thirteen children which included her siblings Margaret, Lewis, Isabella, Nancy, Author, Herman, Henry, Jean, Katie, June, Betty and Winston -- all of whom she loved dearly.  She attended Dunbar High School in Washington, DC.

She married the love of her life James J. Washington, Sr. on January 2, 1947 in Markham, Virginia in her parent’s home. From their faithful and loving union of 49 years were born five children: Barbara, Joan, Brenda, Mildred “Josephine,” and James, Jr. “Jimmy.”

Mother Washington accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and attended and served at Mount Morris Baptist Church in her earlier years. She later moved to Winchester, Virginia where she joined and served Guilfield Baptist Church in Millwood, Virginia where she was designated as a “Mother of the Church” under her pastor, The Reverend Harold L. Brown, Sr. 

As a devoted member of her church and community, Mother Washington served in the following capacities: Deaconess and Mother of the Church, Guilfield Baptist Church; Deaconess, Mount Morris Baptist Church; President of the Mount Morris Senior Choir; Sunday School Teacher; Vacation Bible School & Crafts Teacher; Member of God’s Messengers (family singing group); Member of the Sisters of the Cross (community singing group); and Fundraiser for Meals on Wheels, Winchester, VA. She also participated in the Winchester, VA Senior Olympics winning several awards and being featured in the Winchester Star newspaper.

Mother Washington is preceded in death by her husband, Deacon James J. Washington, Sr.; her parents: Virginia and Lewis Summers, her daughters: Brenda L. Baltimore and Minister Barbara Green; her son-in-law, Minister Wilbert E. Green, Jr.; her granddaughter, Angelique Baltimore; her grandson, Wayne H. Brooks, Jr.; and her great great-grand daughters: Aniscia I. Nitto and Gigi A. Jones; and her siblings: Margaret Jackson, Lewis Summers, Isabella Washington, Nancy Marlow, Author Summers, Herman Summers, Henry Summers, Jean Summers, Katie Hill, and Betty Summers.

She is survived by her daughters: Joan P. Brooks (Wayne) of Front Royal, Virginia; Mildred J. Washington of Tucson, Arizona; her son, James J. Washington, Jr. of Winchester, Virginia; her sister, June Parker of Front Royal, Virginia; her brother, Winston Summers of Front Royal Virginia; her seven grandchildren: Mrs. Annette (Keith) McCullough of Warrenton, VA, Mrs. Soanya (Eric) Parks of Manassas, VA, Rev. Wilma J. Brooks of Front Royal, VA, Ms. Theresa Gross of Manassas, VA, Mrs. Millicent (Scott) Baez of Winchester, VA, Ms. Jacqui Washington of Front Royal, VA, Mrs. Joycelyne (Carl) Jordan of Front Royal, VA; her twelve great-grandchildren; her six great-great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends who will truly miss her loving and devoted spirit. 

The Homegoing Celebration for Mother Mildred S. Washington will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church located at 240 Church Street, Front Royal, Virginia 22630. The family will receive friends during a one-hour Visitation period starting at 10:00 am just prior to the service.  She will be laid to rest immediately following the funeral service at the Mt. Morris Community Cemetery in Hume, Virginia.  Her granddaughter The Reverend Wilma J. Brooks will be officiating the celebration and her pastor The Reverend Harold L. Brown, Sr. will be the eulogist. Letters of condolences, cards, and floral arrangements should be sent to the church.
