Mary Edwards Obituary

Mary Catherine Edwards, more affectionately known as “Cattie,” was born on October 7, 1943, to the late Deacon James Frederick Peterson, I and Lee Vallie Peterson. She is the third of eight children from that union. God called His angel home on January 16, 2024.

Mary was educated in the Fauquier County Public School system and graduated from William C. Taylor High School in Warrenton, VA. in 1965 and was the valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Once again, she was the valedictorian of her class. She was a member of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority.

She was baptized at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Gainesville, Va. at an early age and has remained a member of Mt. Pleasant until her death.

She met and married Deacon Tyrone Edwards on December 11, 1971, and recently celebrated 52 years of marriage. From this union, she gained a daughter, Anitra Marie Connelley and a foster son, James Carter (deceased).

After college, “Cattie” was employed by the Federal Government in Washington, D.C. She later moved her employment to the District of Columbia Government and was the Assistant Comptroller for the Department of Recreation and the late Mayor Marion Barry was her immediate superior. She retired from the District Government after 33 plus years of service. After her retirement, she was employed by the Minnieland Daycare Center as a Supervisor/Teacher. She was also a teacher for the ABC Learning Institute in Manassas, VA. “Cattie” loved all children, especially the babies. Some of her kids would come running up to her in the mall just to get a hug.

“Cattie” has held a number of positions in Mt. Pleasant, including Superintendent of Sunday School, Director of Children’s Church, Director of the Children’s Choir, and Chair of the Deaconess Board. She was also a member of the Senior Choir, the Young’s Mass Choir, The Gospel Chorus and the Peterson Family Singers. She was one of the best Sunday School teachers around.  People still speak of how much they learned of the Bible from her teaching them in Sunday School.

She was also a “playwright.” She was known throughout Northern Virginia for the original plays she wrote and directed for Mt. Pleasant, especially for the Sunrise Services and for the Queen’s March held at the Northern Virginia Baptist Center in Gainesville, VA. Two of the most popular plays were, “From The Cradle To The Cross” and “When The Angels In Heavan Rejoice.” She also assisted in making costumes and props for these plays.

“Cattie” also organized and directed the “Clean-up Carver Road” event, and the church was recognized in the local newspaper for their efforts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Deacon James F. and Lee V. Peterson, husband, Deacon Tyrone Edwards (God called him home 6 days before her death), one brother, James W. Peterson, II, three sisters Shirley A. Thorne, Dorothy E. Peterson, and Ruth M. Lloyd, and a foster son, James Carter.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters: Lillian L. Blackwell, and Naomi I. Smith (Rev. Dr. Samuel H. Smith, Sr.); and one brother, Henry F. Peterson, I (Delores); one brother-in-law, Rev. Lonnie L. Lloyd, Sr.; one step daughter, Anitra Marie Connelley; three step granddaughters; seven step great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends,
