Marvin Pitts, Sr. Obituary

Marvin Winfield Pitts, Sr., 79, of Warrenton, VA, passed February 1, 2023.

Marvin Winfield Pitts, Sr. was born on August 22, 1943, in Washington D.C. to the late Roger W. and Beatrice W. Pitts.  He received Christ and was baptized during his childhood.  At an early age, he re-located to Warrenton, VA, until his heavenly departure.

Marvin received his high school diploma from W.C. Taylor High School and went to work at Atlantic Research where he was a missile technician. He served in the United States Army for two years and was awarded three service medals to include one for expert marksmanship. After his tour in Italy, where he learned Italian, he returned to Warrenton, VA, and married Barbara King, and was blessed with three children.

He was employed at Safeway, where he was promoted to management and worked there for over 25 years. Marvin also enjoyed driving the school bus for Fauquier County for over 40 years, where the children ensured he had a story to tell every day.

Marvin achieved his dream by establishing his own business, “Marvin’s Excavating.” He immensely enjoyed driving his big brown dump truck, “Betsy,” and would often be seen on the road serving his dedicated customers. Marvin often used his equipment to help family and friends in need. He had an exceptional work ethic where he worked full-time, part-time, and over-time to total over 100 worked years of service.

In his younger years, he played the trumpet and was a member of the “Rocking Catalinas” and “The Swinging Knights.” He also enjoyed traveling and visiting Charles Town Casino, hoping to win the “Big One”.  He was a jack-of-all-trades and could fix almost anything and built many projects. He loved joy riding to the mountains and looking at beautiful scenery and knew every back road within 100 miles.  Marvin loved to tell many stories and always shared a laugh.   He faced his illness with bravery and humor, often joking with the nurses and speaking Italian to them. His greatest joy was being with his grandchildren; they all loved riding on his equipment, putting on fireworks shows, and teaching them the use of firearms. He never missed a family dinner, celebrations, or a piece of cake.

Marvin leaves to cherish his memories, his children: Marvin W. Pitts Jr. (Mary), Barry Pitts (Stephanie), Melandie Adams, Derrick Campbell (Chris), Brittany Brown; grandchildren: Detler, Avery, Barry, Daren, Bryan, Jackson, and Carter; siblings: Sonja Addison, Brenda Fuller (William), Jacqueline Holley, and Diane Dortch; aunt, Mabel Kornegay; dear friend, Barbara Johnson; and a host of family and friends. He was one of a kind and will be dearly missed.
