Margaret Anne Cole was born in Culpeper, Virginia, on November 19,1945, to the late Maury Charles Hawkins and Lucy Ree Jenkins Hawkins. She was the oldest sister to siblings, Lucille and Preston. Margaret loved her siblings and has always been their biggest supporter and protector despite any circumstance. Some of her family affectionately referred to her as “Margaret Anne." Margaret grew up in Culpeper and attended the local schools. She worked at various places until retirement with Farmer Jack Grocery Store (formerly A&P) as a Buyer and Shop Steward. Margaret was passionate and vocal about her beliefs and convictions, always encouraging others to know their rights and responsibilities. She lived life optimistically always with a “keep it real” zest. Margaret never met a stranger and she loved with every fiber of her being. She cherished and was most proud of her family – her husband Bo, and her beloved children, Amanda and Timmy.
The biblical meaning for the name Margaret is “pearl”. This perfectly describes Margaret, as she was unique and precious; her love and devotion to others was a true rarity. She was truly a one-of-a-kind blessing to all who knew her. Margaret was generous to a fault, kind, trusting, forgiving, funny, and most of all, loving. She was always willing to stop everything- no matter the time of day or night- to listen without judgment and always quick to offer advice. She welcomed almost anyone into her home and on many occasions allowed people to live there until their circumstances improved and never expected anything in return.
On a walk to the Hazel River with her siblings and best friend, Cathy and Roger Lee, Margaret met William (Bo) Cole and they later married in 1964. Soon, they started their family and introduced their daughter, Amanda to the world on July 29, 1965. Four years later, on August 7, 1969, Timmy arrived. Margaret’s proudest accomplishments were her children! She was the epitome of what every mother can only hope to be. She loved with all her heart, selflessly and unconditionally. As the children grew, Margaret and Bo continued in their careers. They belonged to a bowling league and enjoyed traveling to various places participating in tournaments. She enjoyed drawing, cutting hair, cooking big meals, and baking. She always wanted to be prepared to feed anyone who might happen to visit. Amanda and Timmy’s friends were frequent visitors and soon became a part of their extended family. They were always warmly welcomed with love and open arms.
Margaret was most proud and happy when visiting with her children. Her daughter, Amanda married and adopted five children and later was blessed with five additional children through marriage to her husband, Jonathan. Together, Amanda and Tim made Margaret a grandmother to: De’Angela, Jamie; twins: Justin and Lily, Hannah, Kimmie, Lauren, Lindsey, Marcus, Victoria, Jasmine, and Michael. More blessings were received through their great-grandchildren: Jalyn, Faith, Grace, Zyae, Marcus Jr. and Timothy Lance, named in memory of his amazing grandfather.
Margaret loved and enjoyed her family, nieces, nephews, and special friends with such a passion. She enjoyed music of all genres and attended many concerts of her favorite singers, “Tom Jones and Percy Sledge”. “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” by Guns and Roses became one of her all-time favorites after the passing of Timmy. Margaret loved red and felt her best in a red dress and high heels! She loved celebrating the Christmas holiday season and if you were fortunate enough to visit their house during this time of year, you would see presents from the floor to the ceiling! She delighted in decorating and showering her loved ones with gifts.
Margaret endured hardship with her health during the last several years. She became somewhat housebound from a hip injury but found entertainment and enjoyment playing Penny Poker with Bo and her nephew George Jr, with whom she had a special bond. Margaret and Bo spent a lot of quality time watching their favorite Westerns and the news. They enjoyed the companionship and sassiness of their spoiled pug, Lance.
Margaret took pleasure in an occasional steak, but devoured potatoes in any way she could eat them . . . mashed, potato cakes, baked potatoes, and French fries. She became more of a finicky eater, but gladly indulged in orange candy slices that must be cold and stored in the refrigerator and yellow jellybeans when the opportunity presented itself. Margaret always had her to-go glass of diet Pepsi and pack of Marlboro lights. She would not leave home without her makeup and hair done. She was anything but vain, but always took pride in her appearance. She was the true definition of beauty inside and out.
The heavenly crown Margaret is wearing will most certainly reflect the many selfless acts of compassion and kindness she displayed to countless people. We will miss her sweet earthly presence but rejoice in knowing that she has been reunited with Timmy and is awaiting our arrival. Rest in peace, Margaret Anne. We will remember and love you forever.
