Audrey Thompson Jones

Deaconess Audrey Estelle Thompson Jones departed this life and entered her eternal rest on Tuesday, January 3, 2022, at the Spring Oak at Warrenton Assisted Living Facility.

At an early age Audrey accepted Jesus as her Savior and joined Providence Baptist Church in Remington, Virginia. She was a lifelong member. She served as a Deaconess and Sunday school teacher.

Audrey was born on May 7, 1932, to the late Ruby Francis and Andrew Thompson in Remington, Virginia. She was the third of four children born to this union. She was educated in the Fauquier County Public Schools and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1948.

After completing High School, Audrey continued her education at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia. She graduated in 1952 with a degree in Education. She began her teaching career in the Culpeper County Public School system, then in the Fauquier County Public School system. Overall, her teaching career spanned 42 years, most of which focused on teaching first and second grade. Teaching was her passion; she enjoyed helping to shape young minds in the classroom. She did not want to move into administration because of her love for educating the students who entered her classroom. Audrey retired on July 1, 1995.

Outside of the classroom Audrey was a dedicated wife and mother. She loved to cook, and her family enjoyed her holiday fruit cakes, Sunday chicken breasts in mushroom gravy with macaroni and cheese, and oyster stew. But Audrey also knew how to sew. Although she often used a pattern, she could sew without a pattern and did it well. She was known to make outfits for all family members who needed an outfit for any reason. She also used her sewing prowess to support her husband Bob’s furniture upholstery business. Yes, Audrey was no stranger to hard work; she truly exemplified the traits and characteristics of a Proverbs 31 woman.

On July 24, 1956, Audrey was united in marriage with Robert M. Jones, Sr., aka, “Bob.” Bob pursued Audrey after he saw her in the Safeway in Warrenton; they were married 3 months after their initial meeting. This union lasted for 62 years, until Bob’s passing in 2017. To this union were born four sons, Robert, Jr. (Mitch), Mark, Marlon (Pete), and Melvin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Jones, Sr., parents, Andrew and Ruby Thompson, brother John, sister Ruth, daughter-in-law, Cathy, and grandson Alex.

Audrey is survived by her four sons, Min. Robert M. Jones, Jr (April), Fredericksburg, Virginia, Mark J. Jones, Manassas, Virginia, Marlon T. Jones (Kathleen), Lorton, Virginia, Rev. Dr. Melvin E. Jones (Kimberly), Herndon, Virginia; one brother, Andrew A. Thompson (Evelyn), Woodbridge, Virginia; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Jones, Bealeton, Virginia; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Although saddened by her departure from this life, Audrey’s legacy will carry on by her impact on those she taught during her teaching career and her service to God through her Christian witness.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, January 14, 2023, from 11 am until 12 pm with services starting at 12 pm at Providence Baptist Church, 7498 Sumerduck Road, Remington, Virginia, 22734. Rev. Nathaniel Harpe will deliver the eulogy.

Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Bealeton, Virginia.
